How to Dual Boot a PC

Multiboot

Can we use more than one Operating System on the same PC? The answer is Yes. The process is called dual booting or sometimes multi booting. When you have a multi boot configuration on your PC then while starting your PC you will see a list of installed Operating Systems from which you have to choose one in which you want to boot to. This list is called boot menu.
There can be two types of dual booting:
  • Dual booting different versions of the same Operating System (OS)
  • Dual booting two different Operating systems

Dual booting different versions of the same Operating System (OS)

Here I will take two Windows Operating Systems. Let’s take for example Windows XP and Windows 7. But before dual booting Windows XP and Windows 7, we should have the following knowledge:
  • Windows XP used to contain boot.ini file for making entries to the Bootloader. However, Windows 7 doesn’t contain boot.ini file, instead it contains BCD (Boot Configuration Data) file for the same.
  • It’s better to install the latest OS after the older one. This is because the latest Operating System can recognize the startup files of the older one but the older Operating System don’t recognize the startup files of the latest OS. So on installing the latest OS, older OS gets automatically added to the boot menu of the latest OS.
  • You should also have the idea to install Windows OS.
  • Now let’s go through the steps.

STEPS

  • Let us assume that you already have Windows XP on your computer and you want to install Windows 7 alongside it.
  • Turn on Windows XP and create a new partition with NTFS file system. [Note: Backup all your data before partitioning. The size of the partition should be more than 15 GB.]
  • Now insert the Windows 7 DVD and restart your PC.
  • It will ask you to press any key to boot from disk. [Note: If the DVD doesn’t boot then check your BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) settings. Change the boot settings of your BIOS to boot optical drive first.]
  • As you are familiar with installing Windows, just select custom installation and choose the appropriate partition you have created to install Windows 7.
  • Installing will complete and Windows XP will be automatically added to the Bootloader of Windows 7. [Note: If something goes wrong and Windows XP doesn’t get added to the Bootloader, then you can use EasyBCD, a free software to make entries to the Bootloader.]
  • Now it’s all set. Just enjoy your new experience!

To learn how to use EasyBCD check out my post: EasyBCD : Most reliable way to Dual Boot

What to do when you already have a latest OS, such as Windows 7 and you want to dual boot Windows XP with it.

Nothing is impossible! You can install in this way also. But you have to face some difficulties. After installing Windows XP you won’t be able to boot into Windows 7 because Bootloader of Windows XP will overwrite the existing Bootloader of Windows 7. So for that you have to repair your Bootloader. Just install Windows 7 Installation DVD and repair your Windows 7 installation. Then Bootloader of Windows 7 will be added and you will be able to boot into Windows 7. But now you won’t be able to boot into Windows XP. So for that you have to add an entry for Windows XP in Windows 7 bootloader. Therefore use EasyBCD to add the entry for Windows XP. Now it’s all done. Restart your computer you will be able to see the boot menu.

How to make an Operating System default in the Bootloader or Boot Menu

Open Control Panel >> Open System >> Click on Change Settings >> Open Advanced tab >> Click Settings under Startup and Recovery >> Select your preferred Default OS >> Click OK >> Again OK.

You can follow the above steps also to dual boot :
  • Windows XP and Windows 8/8.1
  • Windows 7 and Windows 8/8.1/10
  • Windows Vista and Windows XP
  • Windows Vista and Windows 7

Now let’s move on to the other type of dual booting.

Dual Booting two different Operating Systems

Here I will show you how to dual boot Mac OSX 10.6 and Windows 7. For that it is better to install Mac OSX 10.6 first and Windows 7 later on.
There are two ways to dual boot Windows 7 with Mac OSX 10.6. If you are using original Mac PC then you can do it with boot camp. But if you are using Hackintosh PC (Mac OSX installed on a non-Apple hardware), boot camp will not be available. So for that you have to follow the following steps.

STEPS

  • Install Mac OSX.
  • Then install Windows 7 in custom mode and in disk utilities create an NTFS partition.
  • Now Windows 7 will be installed in the specified partition.
  • But there will be a problem, your PC will directly boot into Windows 7 without prompting for Mac OSX.
  • Now you have to use EasyBCD to add Mac OSX to the Windows 7 bootloader.
  • Now it’s all done, restart your PC and choose the appropriate OS you want to boot to. Enjoy!

[Note: Before following the above steps backup all your important data. Because if something went wrong then there can be a huge data loss.]

You can also dual boot:
  • Windows 7 and Ubuntu
  • Windows 7 and other Linux
  • Windows 8 and Ubuntu

Advantages of Dual Booting

  • We can use two Operating Systems on the same PC.
  • We can try different applications compatible with different Operating Systems
  • We can use best features of the different Operating Systems on the same PC.

Drawbacks of Dual Booting

  • We can’t switch between OS instantaneously.
  • We can’t use the application directly, installed on the other OS.

How to Change the Icon of an Android App

There are millions of android apps in and around the web and each app has its icon. Every developer creates the icon of his app according to his suitability. But we do not find some icons interesting or they do not match to the theme of our android smartphone. So, is there any way to change those icons according to our choice?

The answer is ‘yes there is one very easy way’— APK Icon Editor.

APK Icon Editor

APK Icon Editor is an open source application by which you can edit your APK files downloaded from Google Play or from anywhere else. By using this application you can change the icon of your android app and do a lot of other things (which we’ll discuss later). APK Icon Editor also supports Kindle and Blackberry APKs. Thus, it is compatible with large number of devices. The only drawback of APK Icon Editor is that it is a Windows software so you cannot use it directly on your android device, you have to take help of your PC.

How to Change the Icon of an APK File

Now let’s move on to the main task – ‘how to change the icon of an APK file’. You just have to follow these easy steps:

  1. Download and install APK Icon Editor on your PC
  2. Backup the APK of your Android App using ES File Explorer or AndroZip or other.

  3. Android App with Original Icon
    Android App with Original Icon
  4. Transfer the APK file to your PC or laptop.
  5. Open the APK file with APK Icon Editor software installed on your PC. You’ll see a window like below.

  6. Android app opened with APK Icon Editor
Android app opened with APK Icon Editor
  7. Select the highest size of icon (here I select XXXHDPI). (You also have to change the ‘Device’ if you are using Blackberry or Kindle)
  8. Right click on the icon and select Replace Icon from the dropdown menu. Alternatively you can also use the shortcut key Ctrl+R.

  9. Android App - replacing icon in APK Icon Editor
Replacing the icon in APK Icon Editor
  10. Then select the appropriate icon (the icon should of size 192x192 or more for XXXHDPI). If it asks for ‘Resize Automatically’, select ‘Yes’. The icon will be replaced with the new one.

  11. Replacing the icon of Android App
Replacing the icon of Android App
  12. Then you can either click on the button ‘Apply to All’ (to make all icons from LDPI to XXXHDPI of the current size) or you can manually replace the icons of all sizes one by one.
  13. Then click on ‘Pack APK’ button and transfer the newly generated APK file to your Android Device.
  14. To install this newly modified Android App you first have to uninstall the original app.
  15. Now you have successfully changed the icon of your android app.

  16. Android App with Changed Icon
    Android App with Changed Icon

Drawbacks of this method

  • You have to uninstall the original app to install this modified app; that means you may have to lose your previous data.
  • You will not get automatic updates to your modified android app. You have to manually download the updates from Google Play by uninstalling your modified app.

So, this method is not much useful for frequently updating apps (only if you like to update your apps). But this method is very useful for stable apps or some non-Google Play apps.

N.B.- Use this method for your personal use only.

What More You Can Do With APK Icon Editor

APK Icon Editor is a massive tool by which you can do lot more things. You can also change the name, version etc. of your APK file under the Properties tab. But for this you have to change the mode to ‘Apktool’ by clicking the ‘ZIP’ button in the upper right corner. With APK Icon Editor you can even explore APK contents and see or modify what’s inside your APK file.

So, this was all about changing icons and modifying APK files. Enjoy modifying your Android apps!

The above trick will work on all the editions of Windows 8 or 8.1 (Windows 8 Pro/ Enterprise/RT 32bit & 64bit) and may also work for MMX 353G model.

Easier Method to Install The Drivers

Contributed by Anshu Chaurasiya

Here is an easier method to install the Micromax Modem drivers in Windows 8 or 8.1 or 10 (issues solved 'No Device Found' in Windows 8 or 8.1):
  1. Connect the modem to your Windows PC
  2. Then install the setup file, if it shows 'Install Drivers...FAIL!', don't worry.
  3. It will prompt for a restart then restart your PC.
  4. Now go to C:\Program Files\MMX352G 3G USB Manager\Driver (it is Program Files(x86) for 64 bit users) where you find the following files:
    • cmnsmdm.inf >> right click >> install >> OK
    • cmnsser.inf >> right click >> install >> OK
  5. Now run the modem software, it will show network. Tested by the contributor and its working.
  6. Enjoy...!
>> For Windows 8.1 users (Updated Solution):
Even after following the above steps if your Modem is not detected (the 'No Device' issue persists) then follow the steps below after the above steps:
  1. Open Control Panel>>Device Manager.
  2. Uninstall the drivers of devices having yellow marks under Ports (COM & LPT) i.e. Device Application Interface, Device Diagnostic Interface and Device Pipe.
  3. Then go to Action>Scan for hardware changes.
  4. If again some devices appear with yellow marks, uninstall their drivers and scan for hardware changes.
  5. Restart your PC (Optional Step).
  6. Then open the Modem Software; your MMX352G Modem will be detected this time.
This method is also working on Windows 10. So follow the guide and do give the feedbacks.
